Must Have - Doesn't Hold Us Back From Seeing The World

Once we retire and our little one isn't little any more, I want to do what Lynne and Tim Martin are doing - traveling to their hearts' content without the burden of home ownership "trailing them around the world", while staying at all kinds of homes in different countries as they go.

Mom and Dad at the Newseum in D.C.

Until then, and because we are tied to school schedules for some time to come, I want us to spend every summer in a different city for 3-4 weeks at a time and really get to know the area. A summer in Qingdao, a summer in Fiji, Singapore, New York, Toronto, London, and more.

As we did in Tokyo when we showed up with nothing planned:
  • I want to explore each city at our leisure - not try and cram it all into a 7-day trip and stress ourselves out in so doing.
  • I want to sign up our little one for various camps there and teach him things that he could never learn in school.
  • I want to rent homes on AirBnb and VRBO because it is one of my all-time favorite things to do.
  • I want to invite our family and friends to come stay with us and join us for the adventures.
And I never want to be told that we can't afford it because of a hefty mortgage, or that we can't go away for an extended period of time because we need to get back and meet with the plumber.

Given that we are very late bloomers in every sense of the word, putting off world travel until our little one goes off to college is not an option.

  1. Only you know your budget but I,can tell that this is most likely with a condo renovation. You have a lot of potential compromises. I think you can get over half of what you want by letting go of the other half.....not a bad trade. Prioritize what is most valuable to your family and go from there.
