Before the Severs arrived, I redesigned the kitchen layout to address Joel's concerns that I didn't already address here.
Option 1 was the original design that he took issue with.
Options 2 and 3 follow below.
In both designs, the kitchen feels more contained than in Option 1. The island creates a clear division from the rest of the space. And the concern about the oven door being too close to the dining table is now a moot point.
Since Joel didn't like having the two pocket doors, I removed the one by the window where the stovetop now appears.
I did however convert the pass-through window into a barn door, i.e. the adjacent room will still have two entrances.
Since that room will mostly serve as our family library/study/computer room - we have overnight guests 4-5 weeks a year at most - I really want the easy flow between that space and the great room.
The question now is:
Which design should we choose - Option 2 or Option 3?
Reader input welcomed.
Option 2 is still my pick. I don't like the choppy feel of an island in that small of an area.
